World T20: West Indies overcome Sri Lanka challenge to win match by 7 wickets

Bangalore, Mar 20 (IBNS) West Indies kept their winning streak as they beat defending champions Sri Lanka by 7 wickets, here on Sunday.

Winning the coin toss, West Indies captain Darren Sammy elected to field first and restricted Sri Lanka to 122 runs for the loss of 9 wickets.

The Caribbean bowlers picked wickets at regular intervals as the Sri lankan innings failed to gain any steam.

A 44-run stand between Sri Lankan skipper Mathews (20) and Thisera Perera (40) was the only silver lining for them.

The partnership also propelled their score to an excess of 100 runs.

For West Indies, Samuel Badree picked up 3 wickets, followed by 2 by Bwayne Bravo.

Chasing the score, West Indies were in a bit of trouble as three batsmen were sent back to the pavilion in a quick succession, but opener Andre Fletcher's 84 off 64 balls bailed them out.

Fletcher hit five sixes and six fours in his match saving innings, by virtue of which he was adjudged the player of the match.

The fans were deprived of a Gayle show, as the big Jamaican suffered and injury and did not bat.

For Sri Lanka, Milinda Siriwardena picked up 2 wickets.
