Colombo, Sept 1 (IBNS): Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli on Tuesday appreciated his team after winning the Test series against Sri Lanka on their home turf and called the victory as a 'milestone'.

India won the series on the Sri Lankan soil after 22 years.

After winning the series, Kohli said: "Being 0-1 down was never easy....It feels nice to win, especially with such a young team who are all early in their careers. It is a magnificent milestone to win here for the first time in 22 years."

The Sinhalese Sports Club Ground here witnessed a history as India defeated the hosts by 117 runs in the third match to clinch a series on the Sri Lankan soil after 22 years on Tuesday.

R Ashwin took four wickets while Ishant Shamra scalped three which helped India bowl out Sri Lanka for 268 runs.

Sri Lanka found themselves at a precarious 67 for 3 on Monday  after India set them a steep target of 386 to win the Test match and clinch the 3 match Test series.

Skipper Angelo Mathews (110) and  Kusal Perera  (70)  added 135 runs in the sixth wicket partnership to delay India's victory as both the batsmen fought hard to save the match.

Ashwin got rid off  Perera to break the partnership and Indian bowlers then did not take much time to bowl out the opponents and win the series 2-1.

Virat Kohli and his Indian side performed brilliantly as they came from 1-0 down to win the series 2-1.
