New Delhi, Mar 13 (IBNS): Kolkata lad Viraj Madappa claimed his third victory on the IGU Amateur Tour with a comfortable five stroke win at the 10th edition of The Delhi NCR Cup here at the Par – 72 Delhi Golf Club on Friday.

He shot an even-par for the day for a gross of seven-under par 281 as his challengers faltered coming down the stretch.

Patna’s defending champion Aman Raj finished second with a gross of two-under par 286 while Tapendra Ghai of Delhi moved up a place with a round of two-under par 70 for the day for a gross of one-under 287. Samarth Dwivedi was placed fourth at even-par 288 followed by veteran Gagan Verma a further four strokes behind at 292.

Viraj and Aman both started par-birdie but a double on the third for Viraj reduced to one as Aman couldn’t capitalize and made bogey. He gained those strokes on the sixth and the eighth holes while both the youngsters bogeyed the ninth as they went out two strokes apart. A string of pars followed interspersed by a bogey on the par 5 14th hole as he finished off with a birdie on the 18th where Aman made a double to finish second by one stroke.

“This is my third event at DGC and to win it is special.” Said Viraj. “I’ll savior this win as it is my first on the amateur tour outside Kolkata,” he added.

Third placed Tapendra Ghai bought in the best card of the day of two-under par 70 to claim the Delhi State Championship over veteran Gagan Verma as he made three birdies to go along with a lone bogey on the par 3 seventh hole.
