Second Test against England: Rohit Sharma's crucial 161 runs help India score 300/6 at stumps

Chennai: Rohit Sharma smashed 161 runs and Ajinkya Rahane contributed 67 with his willow as India contributed 300 runs for the loss of six wickets on the first day of the second Test match against England here on Saturday.

After Shubman Gill (0), Cheteshwar Pujara (21) and Virat Kohli (0) departed, Sharma took charge of the ship and hit 18 boundaries and two sixes in his knock to give India the momentum needed after initial jolts.

Rahane hammered nine boundaries in his crucial knock.

At stumps, Rishabh Pant (33*) and Axar Patel (5*) are currently at the crease.

Jack Leach and Mooen Ali picked up two wickets each.
