SAI Netaji Subhas celebrates Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav in Kolkata

Kolkata/IBNS: Netaji Subhas Eastern Centre of Sports Authority of India (SAI) celebrated the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on the occasion of India's 75th Independence by holding a cycle rally and a five-km walk around the Centre in Salt Lake here.

About one hundred people joined the cycling rally while nearly 150 others consisted of trainees and officials of SAI.

The officials included Director of the Centre Vineet Kumar, who flagged off the rally.

The rally was hosted by noted sports persons including archers Deepika Kumari and Mangal Singh Champia, athletes Soma Biswas and Sushmita Singha Roy, archers Deepika Kumari and Mangal Singh Champia , all olympians and Dronacharya awardee athletics coach Dr. Kuntal Roy.

Speaking to IBNS on the sidelines of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, Vineet Kumar said plans are afoot to upgrade the SAI here as a National Centre for Excellence. 

This Centre at present conducts training  with residential facilities in five  disciplines - athletics , archery, gymnastics, hockey and table tennis.

Two of the trainees from this centre Pranati Nayek Satyajit Mondal  are now representing the country at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in gymnastics.

A Sports Science Centre would also be set up here.The  capacity of trainees' hostels here would also be increased  from about 300 now to 550.
