Indian cricket icon Rohit Sharma, who only plays ODI format now, posted an emotional image on his X showing him standing in front of the Sydney Airport's departure gate, hinting that his future on the field is nearing an end.

Sharma played the three-match ODI series against Australia as a batsman after selectors handed over the captaincy responsibility to young Shubman Gill.

Gill had previously taken charge of the Test squad after Sharma retired from the longest format of the game.

Sharma wrote: "One last time, signing off from Sydney."

Sharma, stitching a memorable partnership with Virat Kohli, smashed a heroic 122 runs not out to help India win the third ODI against Australia in Sydney.

India, however, lost the series 2-1, but their knocks ensured Australia did not suffer a clean sweep.

They contributed an unbeaten 168-run knock in the second wicket partnership.

India beat Australia by nine wickets in the match, a consolation victory for the team ahead of the T20 series.

Kohli remained unbeaten at 74.
