New Delhi/IBNS/UNI: India Captain Rohit Sharma became the fastest Indian batsman to smash a World Cup century, overpowering the previous record held by Kapil Dev.

Unleashing his belligerence, he brought up his century in 63 balls against Afghanistan compared to Kapil's 72 balls against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup.

Rohit scored his century with a boundary and a single off Mohammad Nabi's bowling in the 18th over. The innings was studded with 12 boundaries and 4 sixes.

This century also was his 7th in the ICC World Cups and also holds the record for scoring a maximum number of centuries in a single edition of the tournament. He has got five of them in the 2019 World Cup.

Rohit also scored the lion's share of runs in the 156 runs partnership for the first wicket with Ishan Kishan who scored 47 before he fell to Rashid Khan.

The Indian Captain also fell to Rashid later in the innings, cleaning him up and attempting a slog sweep to depart for an 84-ball 131.

By then India had crossed the 200-mark with plenty of wickets and balls to spare in the chase.

Batting first, Afghanistan posted a competitive 272/8. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai led the way with knocks of 80 and 62 respectively, the two stitching a 121-run stand for the fourth wicket.
