New Delhi, May 3 (IBNS): Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar has been named as the Indian Olympic Association's (IOA)'s goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent for the 2016 Olympics at Rio de Janeiro, reports said on Tuesday.

Tendulkar, who was part of the World Cup winning Indian side in 2011, accepted the IOA's offer to to be the ambassador of the Indian contingent.

The former Indian skipper joined actor Salman Khan and shooter Abhinav Bindra as the ambassador.

The major sporting event of the year will be held later this year.

The IOA had earlier triggered a controversy by naming Bollywood superstar Salman Khan as the Goodwill Ambassador  of India's Rio Olympics contingent.

The move was criticised by several Indian sports icons.
