The first Test match is balanced evenly after India put up 90 runs for the loss of two wickets against England in their second innings at the end of the third day, taking a lead of 96 runs on Sunday.

Skipper Shubman Gill, who scored a century in the first innings, looked solid at 6 not out while opener KL Rahul anchored the innings at the other end by scoring 47 unbeaten runs.

India's other opener Yashasvi Jaiswal could not repeat his century knock in the second innings and was dismissed for 4 runs by Brydon Carse.

Sai Sudharsan contributed 30 runs with the willow before he was dismissed by English skipper Ben Stokes.

India could not capitalise on the first innings total of 471 runs by managing to take only a six-run lead against the English cricketers who were dismissed for 465 runs.

Harry Brook (99) missed his century by a whisker but remained the key man behind reducing the first innings deficit.

Jamie Smith  (40),  Chris Woakes (38) and Brydon Carse (22) contributed with their willows while Ollie Pope was the top scorer for the hosts by scoring 101 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah shone with the red cherry and picked up five wickets, leaving the British batsmen just behind the Indian side.

England's lower order kept Indian bowlers struggling by contributing 112 runs.
