Dubai, Feb 25 (IBNS) The ICC on Wednesday confirmed that the Event Technical Committee of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 has approved Shafiqullah Shafiq as a replacement player for Merwais Ashraf in Afghanistan's squad for the tournament.

Merwais is suffering from a side strain, an injury he picked up in the match against Sri Lanka.

"The 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman has played 10 One-Day Internationals in which he has scored 179 runs at an average of 25.57 and dismissed six batsmen behind the wickets. His last ODI was against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in December 2014," the ICC said in a statement.

The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 is Geoff Allardice (ICC General Manager – Cricket, Chairman), Campbell Jamieson (ICC General Manager – Commercial), John Harnden (Chief Executive, CWC 2015 LOC), Gavin Larsen (Cricket Operations Manager, New Zealand), Russel Arnold and Sanjay Manjrekar (independent nominees).

Afghanistan is in Pool A of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 along with co-hosts Australia and New Zealand, Bangladesh, England, Sri Lanka and fellow qualifier Scotland.

Afghanistan has played and lost against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, while its third pool stage match is against Scotland in Dunedin on Thursday.
