I have not followed Waqar Younis: Umran Malik

Srinagar: Umran Malik, the young fast bowler from Jammu and Kashmir, has  said he did not follow Pakistani legend Waqar Younis as his role model.

He has often been compared with the former Pakistani pacer ever since he emerged in the Indian cricket scenario.

“I have not followed Waqar Younis. I have a natural action. My idols include (Jasprit) Bumrah, (Mohammed) Shami and Bhuvneshwar (Kumar) bhai. I used to follow them when I was playing while coming through the ranks,” Malik told The Indian Express.

He said he wants to perform his best for the nation.

“There’s no point getting carried away. If it is destined to happen, it will Inshallah. I want to do my best for my country. I have got an opportunity in these five (T20I) matches (against South Africa). My goal will be that we win all five matches, I perform well and single-handedly win those games for India,” said Malik.

The Kashmiri lad picked up 22 wickets in 14 games for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL).

Malik was appreciated by all corners for his raw speed and wicket taking abilities.

He was picked in the Indian squad that will face South Africa in a T20 series amid hype around him.
