Zimbabwe Cricket has appointed former West Indies captain and fast-bowling great Courtney Walsh as the team’s bowling consultant ahead of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the ICC said in a statement on Friday.

The limited-overs multi-nation tournament will be co-hosted by India, the defending champions, and Sri Lanka, and will be held from February 7 to March 8.

Walsh, who brings vast experience of playing in subcontinental conditions, has already begun working with the Zimbabwe squad in preparation for the global event.

Zimbabwe have been placed in Group B, alongside Australia, Ireland, Oman and Sri Lanka.

The team is making a return to the tournament after missing the 2024 edition, having failed to qualify through the Africa Qualifier in 2023. This time, however, Zimbabwe secured their place by qualifying through the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier 2025, alongside Namibia.

Zimbabwe Cricket Managing Director Givemore Makoni said the appointment was aimed at strengthening the team’s technical depth ahead of the World Cup.

“Courtney Walsh brings unparalleled experience and insight at the highest level of international cricket, particularly in fast bowling,” Makoni said. “As we prepare for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, it was important to bring in someone who understands what it takes to succeed on the global stage.”

“His knowledge, professionalism and ability to mentor players will be invaluable as we sharpen our bowling resources for the challenges ahead,” he added.

Zimbabwe will open their World Cup campaign against Oman at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on February 9, before facing Australia at the R. Premadasa Stadium on February 13.
