Champions Formidables win team event at All India Shree Cement Bridge Championship
Kolkata/IBNS: India's leading bridge team FORMIDABLES represented by Sumit Mukherjee, Kaustabh Nandi, Rajeshwar Tiwari, Kaustabh Milind Bendre, Sayantan Kushari and Sagnik Roy stamped their authority on this mind game as they bagged the title for the team event in the All India Shree Cement Bridge Championship for the fourth time in a row.
FORMIDABLES stormed past a fighting TEAM MONICA JAJOO after keen contest in the final of the meet at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in New Town here Sunday.
FORMIDABLES , who scored a total of 88.5 International Match points in the title clash received a purse of Rs.1,80,000.00 which was winners' stake while TEAM MONICA JAJOO, who earned 78 IMPS remained contended with Rs.1,20,000 being the runners up.
The MP Pairs event of the championship was won by the duo of Aloke Kumar Sadhu scoring 730.8 Match Points (MPs) while Samir Basak and Sandip Datta finished second with 699.7 MPs.
The final of the team event saw TEAM MONICA JAJOO starting in a confident manner and a lead of 20 IMPs ( 34 – 14 ).
But in the next three rounds in the final , FORMIDABLES like the true champions scored 18 , 23 and 24 against 10 , 14 and 20 IMPs by TEAM MONICA JAJOO.
FORMIDABLES finally clinched the issue as they also had 9.5 carried over IMPs which they earned from the Swiss League and was added to their four round score in the final.
Earlier in the semifinal true to the expectation FORMIDABLES defeated MAVERICKS by a huge margin of 114 IMPs (160- 46) maintaining lead in three of the four rounds which also earned them 9.5 carry over points.
On the other hand Team MONICA JAJOO had to fight hard to edge past DEEPADHAAR by 16 IMPs (116 90).
At the end of the third round of the second semifinal DEEPADHAAR were ahead against their opponents by ten IMPs (73 – 63).
But in the final round TEAM MONICA JAJOO pulled up their socks and produced a superlative form to score 43 IMPs while DEEPADHAAR failed to rise to the occasion and could earn only 17 IMPs bringing an end to their fine run in the meet.
