Brisbane, Dec 20 (IBNS): Australian defeated India by six wickets to take 2-0 lead in the second Test here on Saturday.

Resuming from the overnight score of 71 for one, Indian batsmen managed to post only 224 runs on the scorecard.

With only 128 runs to win, Australia reached 130 runs by losing six wickets.

The hosts lost six wickets but they never lost control over the match and won the Test with a day  to spare.

With injured Shikhar Dhawan (81) not coming to bat first, it was Virat Kohli (1) who departed early in the morning hours.

Things turned worse as India lost the wickets of Ajinkya Rahane (10), Rohit Sharma (0), MS Dhoni (0) and R Ashwin (19) quickly.

It was later 60 runs partnership in the eighth wicket partnership between Dhawan and Umesha Yadav ( 30) which helped India give a double figure taget to Australia.

Taking four wickets, Mitchell Johnson destroyed the top order and Josh Hazlewood (2/74), Mitchell Starc (2/27) and Nathan Lyon (2/33) also contributed in quickly sending the Indian batsmen to the pavilion.

Australia received two early blows as they lost the wickets of David Warner (6) and Shane Watson (0).

Chris Rogers  (55) and Steve Smith (28) added 63 runs in the thirds wicket partnership to stabilise the innings after it lost two crucial wickets early.

Australia lost six wickets but reached the target easily at the end and took a dominating 2-0 lead in the series.

Dhoni's luck as captain in the overseas conditions continued to be poor as he lost his 14th Test match outside the sub-continent.

The third match of the series will be played in Mebourne. India has two more Tests to bounce back in the series and and draw it.

Smith registered his first victory as Test skipper.

Brief score:  India 408 & 224 in 64.3 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 81, Cheteshwar Pujara 43, Mitchell Johnson 4/61, Mitchell Starc 2/27); Australia 505 & (target 128) 25/2 (Ishant Sharma 2/12).
