100 in 40 balls: Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell smashes fastest ODI World Cup century

New Delhi/UNI: Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell delivered an outstanding display of death-over batting, scoring 106 runs from just 44 balls against Netherlands in the 24th match of the ICC Men's World Cup at Arun Jaitley Stadium here on Wednesday.

Maxwell, batting at number six, aggressively attacked the Netherlands' bowling lineup, smashing nine fours and eight sixes.

Maxwell reached his century in just 40 balls, setting a new record for the fastest hundred in a Men's Cricket World Cup, surpassing the previous record set by Aiden Markram against Sri Lanka earlier in the tournament by nine balls.

This record had previously stood since Kevin O'Brien's 50-ball century against England in 2011.

Maxwell's century stands as the fastest by an Australian male cricketer in ODIs and ranks as the fourth fastest of all time.

AB de Villiers' 31-ball century against West Indies in 2015 remains the fastest century in ODIs.

Maxwell reached his fifty in 27 balls and accelerated his scoring to reach the century in just 13 additional deliveries.

Netherlands bowler Bas de Leede bore the brunt of Maxwell's onslaught, conceding 115 runs in his ten overs, marking the most expensive figures in the history of men's ODIs.

David Warner's sixth World Cup century on Wednesday against Netherlands made him the most for Australia, surpassing Ricky Ponting's five.

Warner is now tied for second place for most World Cup hundreds with Sachin Tendulkar and is only behind Rohit Sharma, who has seven.

Maxwell's remarkable performance, particularly in partnership with Captain Pat Cummins, played a pivotal role in Australia's impressive total of 399/8.

In contrast, the Netherlands struggled to mount a successful chase, managing to score only 90 runs before being bowled out.
