Chandigarh, Apr 8 (IBNS): R Ashwin tasted first success as the skipper of Kings XI Punjab as his side, riding on a powerful 16-ball 51 runs knock by KL Rahul, beat Delhi Daredevils by six wickets in their Indian Premier League (IPL) opening match here on Sunday.

Kings registered their first victory in the tournament with the win.

Rahul was in a complete destructive mood as he smashed six boundaries and four sixes in his knock that unsettled the DD bowlers initially.

Picking up four wickets, DD tried to recover their chances but Karun Nair (50), David Miller (24*) and Stonis (22*) did not let that happen and cruised to the target of 167 runs by losing four wickets.

Yuvraj Singh added 12 runs with his willow, smashing two boundaries.

Earlier, under the leadership of new skipper Gautam Gambhir, Delhi posted 166 runs for the loss of seven wickets.

Gambhir, who returned to Delhi, after playing for Kolkata Knight Riders for several seasons, added 55 runs with his willow.

He smashed five boundaries and a six in his 42-ball knock.

The two-time IPL trophy winning skipper showed he is in good form and might gift more memorable innings in the upcoming days.

Ashwin opened the bowling for Punjab and gave away 23 runs in his four overs, picking up a wicket.

Mohit Sharma and  Mujeeb Ur Rahman took two wickets each.
