Vijender jabs all odds to lift WBO Asia Pacific title

New Delhi, July 16 (IBNS): For months, the Indian boxing faithfuls were looking forward to their poster boy Vijender Singh to brave all odds and beat veteran Aussie pugilist Kerry Hope and extend his professional career lead, things which Vijender delivered on the given day by clinching victory by unanimous decision (98-92. 98-92, 100-90) on Saturday, here in the national capital.

However, this game unlike the last six, lasted all the rounds and did not end in a knockout. This was also the Indian's longest match of his career, as he had never been in a 10-round match before.

The odds were in Hope's favour, a seasoned man, but two round in the ring and Vijender was landing accurate the jabs, much to the Aussie's dismay.

If he had to battle the Indian star in the ring, Hope was also battling the hostile crowd outside of it. Every punch by the Indian was greeted with loud cheers.

Among the spectators were Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi. Cricketers Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh too cheered for their compatriot. Others included legendary amateur boxer MC Mary Kom and Bollywood actors Randeep Hooda and Neha Dhupia.

Post his win, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the star.

"Congratulations @boxervijender for a hard fought and well deserved win. It was yet another display of immense skill, strength & stamina," the PM tweeted.

Vijender is now the WBO Asia Pacific Middleweight title holder. This is the first major title of his pro boxing career.
