'MS Dhoni did not win World Cup, Team India did': AB de Villiers

South African cricket icon AB de Villiers has shut the common trend among fans to glorify individuals for laurels in a sport instead of giving credit to a unit.

Often, India's legendary captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is credited for the country's World Cup wins in 2007 (T20) and 2011 (ODI).

Speaking on this, AB said on his YouTube channel, "Cricket is a team game, it's not a player lifting the World Cup. I see that way too often on social platforms. MS Dhoni did not win the World Cup, India won the World Cup, so keep that in mind.

"Don't forget that. Ben Stokes did not lift the trophy in Lord's back in 2019, it was team England."

Dhoni, who was out of form for the entire 2011 World Cup, played a match-winning unbeaten 91-run knock to help India lift the World Cup after 28 years.

Significantly India's other cricket icon, Gautam Gambhir, played matching knocks in both 2007 and 2011 World Cup finals.

After losing greats Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag very early in the run chase against Sri Lanka in 2011 World Cup final, Gambhir first partnered Virat Kohli and later Dhoni to ensure India were on the way to win the final.

Gambhir missed the chance to score a World Cup final hundred after getting bowled out at 97.

Gambhir, who speaks his heart out in public, had earlier urged cricket fans to celebrate all team members for the World Cup win.

The southpaw was criticised for his comment by the cricket fans.
