It’s shocking, says Sourav Ganguly on Jadavpur University student's death

Kolkata: Former Indian cricket board chief and ex-skipper Sourav Ganguly has strongly reacted to the death of a 17-year-old boy by falling from the second floor of his hostel allegedly after being ragged at Jadavpur University in Kolkata.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event, Ganguly said, “It’s shocking actually. There has to be strict laws to control this.”

“This is ridiculous and a shame,” added the cricket icon, reacting to the incident that has kept the state on the boil over the last few days.

Meanwhile, Jadavpur University Thursday issued an order announcing new rules that would come into effect immediately.

The university said that anyone who wants to enter the premises will have to show a valid ID issued by Jadavpur University.

The use of alcohol has also been completely banned on campus.

The West Bengal government has also formed a fact-finding committee to identify the administrative and infrastructural lapses at Jadavpur University that led to the incident.

The committee will function with immediate effect and submit its report to the Higher Education Department within two weeks.

The committee will also ensure corrective measures for implementation to prevent any such untoward incidents in the future, a government statement said.

Police have arrested six students so far in connection with the death of the first-year student last week.

West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose earlier also summoned the JU officials later at his Raj Bhavan office.
