Narendra Modi wishes athletes for CWG Birmingham

New Delhi: Indian PM Narendra Modi on Friday wished the Indian athletes for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

"Best wishes to the Indian contingent at the start of the 2022 CWG in Birmingham. I am confident our athletes will give their best and keep inspiring the people of India through their stupendous sporting performances," Modi tweeted.

Meanwhile, the games were opened with a spectacular ceremony at the Alexander Stadium.

The Prince of Wales Charles officially declared the 22nd edition of the Games open.

The Prince of Wales was quoted as saying by the official website of the Games: “Tonight, in the words of the founder of the Games, we embark once again on a novel adventure here in Birmingham, a pioneering city which has drawn in and embraced so many throughout its history."

“It is a city symbolic of the rich diversity and unity of the Commonwealth, and one which now welcomes you all in friendship," he said.

The event will be held till Aug 8.
