Sydney: Former Australian cricketer Chris Cairns is currently undergoing treatment in the  intensive care unit of a Sydney hospital where his condition is said to be 'serious but stable'.

Cairns, 51, experienced an aortic dissection in his heart last week – a serious condition in which a tear occurs in the inner layer of the body’s main artery (aorta), reports Stuff.

The former Australian cricketer was reportedly transferred to St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney on Tuesday night.

“Mr Cairns is in a serious but stable condition in intensive care at St Vincent's Hospital Sydney after being transferred from Canberra”, a hospital spokesperson told Stuff on Wednesday morning.

Chris Cairns, who is considered as one of the best all-rounders to play the game, appeared in 62 test matches and 215 one-day internationals for his country between 1989 and 2006.

Reacting to the incident, former New Zealand cricketer Chris Harris told Stuff: "It is absolutely devastating. It is the worst news you could possibly get. Absolutely devastated. Obviously it is compounded even further when his family can't be with him because he is in Sydney. It is devastating."

“We grew up together and played all our cricket together, so I have got fond memories of Chris. It is absolutely devastating,” he said.

Ex-New Zealand all-rounder Andre Adams tweeted: "Thoughts and prayers are with Chris and his family. Horrid situation and hoping for the best."
