Beijing/Xinhua/UNI:  More than 2,000 online international chess tournaments will be held over the next month, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced on Saturday.

"FIDE, has decided to promote an online international chess initiative supporting spending long hours at home," said FIDE in a statement.

The "Checkmate Coronavirus" tournaments will be played from May 18 to June 16 across several platforms.

"The goal of the initiative is also to promote the ideals of unity and solidarity, which must be manifested in such challenging times."

Regardless of age, country or region, or level of play, all players can compete in almost 80 tournaments per day, with 1,500 special prizes on offer.

The major prize will consist of at least 64 one-week invitations to the 2021 Chess Olympiad in Moscow. Other prizes include souvenirs, tickets to chess workshops, and mini-matches with grandmasters.
