Christchurch, Mar 15 (IBNS): The International Cricket Council has called off the Christchurch Test to have been played between Bangladesh and New Zealand following the attacks on two mosques in the city on Friday.

ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said in a statement: “Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to the families and friends of those affected by this horrendous incident in Christchurch. Both teams, staff and match officials are safe and the ICC fully supports the decision to cancel the Test match.”

The Test match was scheduled to start from Mar 16.

The Bangladeshi cricketers earlier tweeted that they were safe.

Batsman Tamim Iqbal tweeted: " Entire team got saved from active shooters!!! Frightening experience and please keep us in your prayers #christchurchMosqueAttack."

At least 49 people have died in New Zealand's worst terror attack in which gunmen stormed two city mosques on Friday and opened fire, police commissioner Mark Bush said.

Briefing the media in Wellington, police chief Bush said: "At the Deans Avenue mosque, we now know that 41 people have lost their lives. And at Linwood Avenue, seven have lost their lives."

More than 40 have been injured and one of them has succumbed to injuries. Consequently, the death toll in this attack stands at 49.
