Kolkata/IBNS: The teaser of Srijit Mukherji's biopic on maestro Mrinal Sen, titled Padatik, was unveiled on Tuesday marking the filmmaking legend's 101th birth anniversary.

The teaser was launched at West Bengal's film centre Nandan in presence of lead cast, Bangladeshi actor Chanchal Chowdhury and actress Monami Ghosh along with Srijit.

Chanchal Chowdhury plays the titular role while Monami Ghosh essays Mrinal Sen's wife Geeta Sen in the film, which is a birth centenary homage to the legend.

On essaying the legend on big screens, Chanchal Chowdhury shared, "I was going through a personal loss when I took the role. It was a challenge to portray Mrinal Sen. It was never an easy task for me. Srijit has given his full support. I have tried the most to do the justice."

"When Srijit offered me the role, I thought it was a joke because I doubted my capabilities to essay someone like Mrinal Sen on big screens," said Chowdhury.

The 1:37-minute teaser begins with a scene where a massive crowd is following the last journey of presumably Rabindranath Tagore.

The teaser, which then delves into how Geeta Sen motivates Mrinal Sen to make parallel cinema, captures Sen's journey as a filmmaker amid the turbulent times with his wife by his side.

The title of the biopic is same as that of Sen's 1973 film, which is considered as the third installment of the Calcutta Trilogy by the filmmaker, starring Dhritiman Chatterjee, Simi Garewal and Bijon Bhattacharya in the lead.

Speaking of the biopic, Srijit says, "Padatik is a biographical account of the maestro Mrinal Sen’s life and time which spans over a narrative period of almost 70 years.

"It deals with Mrinal Sen’s works, his essays on cinema, his relationship with his wife, with his son, with his peers, most notably with Satyajit Ray, and of course the politics of his films and the way he used to react to the turbulent time around him."

"The treatment of Padatik follows the quintessential cinematic style of Mrinal Sen using jump cuts, freezes, handling the camera, stills, and existing footage. Padatik is a humble tribute to the maestro in his centenary year," he adds.

The film is produced by Friends Communication.
