Legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen passes away at 95

| @indiablooms | Dec 30, 2018, at 01:39 pm

Kolkata, Dec 30 (IBNS): An era in India's arthouse serious cinema came to an end as legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen passed away at his home in Kolkata's Bhawanipur on Sunday.

Sen breathed his last at 10:30 am. He was 95.

Sen, a Padma Bhushan and Dada Saheb Phalke awardee, paved the way for parallel cinema in India along with Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak.

His films were trenchent commentries on society and his left leaning ideology was evident in his works which were loved and admired by all cutting across ideological differences.

He was best known for his works in films like Bhuban Shome, Ek Din Achank, Padatik, Kharij, Ek Din Pratidin, Khandahar and Mrigayaa among others.

He worked with some of the best Indian actors like Nasiruddin Shah, Shabani Azmi, late Smita Patil, Madhavi Mukherjee and others from both the Bengali film industry as well as Bollywood.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee condoled Sen's death.

“Saddened at the passing away of Mrinal Sen. A great loss to the film industry. My condolences to his family,” she wrote in her tweet.
