From meme legend to martial arts master: Chuck Norris passes away at 86
Chuck Norris, the martial arts grandmaster and Hollywood action icon best known for his role in Walker, Texas Ranger, has died at the age of 86 following what his family described as a “sudden passing.”
In a statement shared on social media, his family said Norris died on Thursday, surrounded by loved ones.
“While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was at peace,” the statement read.
Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, he rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most recognizable faces in action entertainment.
Before his film and television success, Norris was a dominant force in competitive martial arts, winning six consecutive world middleweight karate championships and later founding his own discipline, Chun Kuk Do, along with the United Fighting Arts Federation.
His journey into martial arts began during his service in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in South Korea and trained in disciplines like judo and Tang Soo Do.
Norris transitioned to Hollywood with early appearances such as The Wrecking Crew, but gained global recognition after his iconic fight scene with Bruce Lee in Return of the Dragon, set inside Rome’s Colosseum.
He went on to star in a string of action films including Missing in Action and The Delta Force, before cementing his legacy as Cordell Walker in Walker, Texas Ranger, which ran for nine seasons starting in 1993.
Later in life, Norris became an unlikely internet phenomenon through the viral “Chuck Norris Facts” memes—humorous, exaggerated claims about his toughness—which he embraced, even publishing The Official Chuck Norris Fact Book.
Beyond entertainment, Norris was also an author, philanthropist, and outspoken political voice. He co-founded a nonprofit with former U.S. President George H. W. Bush aimed at promoting martial arts training for youth.
He is survived by five children and his wife, Gena Norris. Just days before his death, he had marked his birthday with a social media post, writing: “I don’t age. I level up.”
His death marks the end of an era for action cinema and martial arts culture, where he stood as both a pioneer and a pop culture legend.
