Christopher Nolan does it again: ‘The Odyssey’ becomes a $1.1 billion Box Office monster
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has achieved two major box-office milestones over the weekend, cementing its position as one of the biggest commercial successes of the year.
The epic film, based on Homer’s ancient Greek masterpiece, has now become IMAX’s highest-grossing release of all time, earning $289 million globally. It has overtaken James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar, which earned $271 million in IMAX theatres, not adjusted for inflation, Variety reported.
The Odyssey is currently the second-highest-grossing film of the year, behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has grossed $1.67 billion. It is also the second-highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, trailing 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned $1.3 billion, according to the magazine.
The film has continued its strong theatrical run even after several weeks on the big screen. It has earned $461 million domestically and $643 million internationally, taking its worldwide box-office tally to $1.1 billion.
The Odyssey is an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem of the same name. The story follows Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, on his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, as he encounters numerous obstacles and challenges along the way.
The film features an ensemble cast led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth and John Leguizamo.
