Zulfiqar makes me reach out to mainstream audience first time : Kaushik Sen

Kolkata, Oct 21 (IBNS) Despite some possible flaws in Shakespearean adaptation in Zulfiqar, it serves one purpose, bringing the Bard's name and work to the mainstream audience, actor Kaushik Sen says.

Kaushik, who enacts the role of Baseer Khan (Brutus in Julius Caesar) in Ceaser-inspired revenge-passion drama in Bengali, says, "the panwala, fish vendor in bazaar are telling me they have watched me on screen for the first time and liked it."

"Director Srijit Mukherjee in Zulfiqar has bridged the yawn between two types of audiences and that is a big gain." Kaushik says on the sidelines of the music CD launch of thriller and first Bengali vampire film  Kuheli where he enacts the role of a crime buster.

Asked to elaborate about the flaws in Srijit's execution, the noted theatre personality and indispensable name in middle of the road cinema in Bengal, says "There can be few in execution. But should not we consider the fact that the audience of Dev's and Ankush's genre of cinema is also getting initiated into the universal appeal of Shakespeare and introduced to his name?"

"Also I had been catering to the audience of 'Iti Mrinalini' and similar types of films. I had been catering to the audience which had so far flocked to Srijit's previous genre of films. Every actor has the urge to reach out to the audience of different genre of films. And Srijit made that possible by himself breaking his own treatment and subject of cinema.

"Whoever is criticising Srijit must keep that in mind," the Open Tee Bioscope actor says.

Kaushik, in this context has a dig at a recent Shakespeare-inspired film by commenting "Everyone knows how that film fared. And how Zulfqar is faring in city single screens, plexes and outside."

"I am happy to reach beyond my hitherto known audience in city and more importantly in suburbs. Zulfiqar is doing very well in Sheoraphuli, Barrackpore, Barasat as well as Hatibagan and Garia," he says

Superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee enacts Zulfiqar Ahmed (Caesar) in the film while Parambrata Chatterjee essays Tony Bragabza (one part of Mark Antony) and Dev Marka Ali (Marcus - the other part of Mark Antony) in the film re-adapting Julius Caesar.
