Dangal retains numero uno spot in China, moves closer to Rs 550 cr mark

Mumbai/Beijing, May 20 (IBNS): After delighting fans at the domestic box-office, Aamir Khan's Dangal is one its way to break and create some more records in China as the movie is taking rapid strides towards the Rs 550-crore (84,863,447 USD) mark.

The wrestling movie, based on the life of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters, all Indian international grapplers, made a good business here in India, raking up over Rs 700 crores (108,225,108 USD).

Dangal is a little more than five crores shy of hitting the aforementioned mark in China.

"#Dangal retains No 1 spot at China BO... The wave refuses to subside... Week 3: Fri $ 5.97 mn Total: $ 84.45 million [₹ 544.91 cr]," business analyst and movie reviewer Taran Adarsh tweeted on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Chinese feminists have bashed the movie for its chauvinistic approach.

"The father’s values make me vomit; he forces his daughters to live a certain type of life with his dream, with money and becoming a champion. You think the movie is about breaking gender stereotypes, but actually it’s knee-deep in prejudice," a viewer was quoted as saying by Global Times tabloid.

"The movie reeks of patriarchy and male chauvinism. The daughters didn’t have any freedom to choose and were raised ferociously by their father to be world champions. The ‘correct result’ in the championship justifies the father’s education," another viewer expressed.

It is the second Indian movie to breach the Rs 1000 crore mark in worldwide collection, after Baahubali 2 raced past the spot earlier this month.
