My method of acting is real life inspired: Irrfan Khan

Jaideep Pandey | | 06 Dec 2015, 03:18 pm
Irrfan Khan is a name that needs no introduction now. Be it the sun-burnt bandit in ‘Pan Singh Tomar’ or the lonely widower in ‘The Lunchbox’, he has never failed to create magic with his art. Jaideep Pandey interviews the masterful artist
Known for his amazing versatility and  talent, there is not a role that Irrfan can’t play with absolute aplomb. The versatile actor, who was seen recently with Aishwarya Rai in Jazbaa and the critically acclaimed Talvar, is a famed alumnus of the National School of Drama. He rose to national acclaim after Haasil, and has been reaching greater heights ever since.

First let’s talk about ‘Talvar’. What do you think really made the movie ‘critically appreciated’ across the industry?

It has a strong script and something that will bind you to the film. The story and the narration of this character would make you stick to the film.

Share your experience on shooting with Konkona Sen Sharma?

Working with Konkona is always good and refreshing as she is a brilliant and a wonderful actress with lots of energy.

‘Talvar’, an intense film, also managed to garner tears from audiences’ eyes. Which scene from the movie made you very weak emotionally?

I would say the whole script was so moving that it evokes an emotion in you.

For you, which role has been more satisfying / challenging? Role in ‘Talvar’? Or ‘Jazbaa’?

Both films hold a separate importance to me which cannot be compared. Talvar is a film based on a real life incident and hence there is a lot more study and research that goes into a film like this. Whereas, Jazbaa is an out an edge-of-the -seat masala entertainer.

One personality trait of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan which you adore the most?

It was a wonderful experience working with her. We shared a great bond working together as I was looking forward to work with her. Our natural chemistry on sets is what you see in the film.

You have been known for your roles in movies like ‘Life of Pi’, ‘The Lunchbox’, ‘Paan Singh Tomar’, ‘Haider’, ‘Piku’, ‘Talvar’, ‘Jazbaa’ . We  have not seen you much in purely commercial movies. Do you believe that offbeat movies serve as a better platform to showcase your talent?

I can only say I get extremely moved by great stories and great cinema. I am here to redefine entertainment with stories which engage the audiences differently. I have always been a story and script person. If I am able to communicate a good script through my character to the audience I feel relieved. I don’t believe in typecasting movies, every movie that I have done has given me a different high.

What’s your method of acting? Are you the one who is in the skin of character even after pack-up?

My method of acting is, getting inspired from real life people. So, all through my life all the people that I have met have been reflected in my character somewhere or the other.

One role in your entire career you relate to most

Each and every role I have played has a special importance in my life hence all my roles are my favourites.

You once mentioned that every superstar has insecurities. So do you have any?

I believe an actor should overcome the self-doubts and concentrate on his or her performances rather than being insecure. This profession is competitive, not with others primarily but also with yourself as you want to do exciting work. Definitely insecurities are always around with everyone, you just need to focus.

Movies you were sceptical about but turned out to be a success and vice versa?

The audience is the King, you can never underestimate them and hence they surprise you with every film release. Once you have done your job as an actor you let them decide the fate.

Lastly, tell us about your upcoming projects?

Currently I am engaged with Anup Singh (the Qissa director is making a new movie titled Song of the Scorpions where Irrfan reportedly plays the role of a camel rider). There are a few announcements which I or my spokesperson will make soon when it's the right time.
