SP Balasubrahmanyam passes away, India mourns iconic singer's demise

Chennai/IBNS: Iconic singer and composer SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away on Friday leaving people from all fraternities grief-stricken. He was 74.

Balasubrahmanyam was admitted to MGM Healthcare on Aug 5 and he was on life support measures since 14th of the same month. 

The singer, who was earlier infected with Covid-19, had received a negative report on Sept 4. 

"In a further setback this morning, despite maximum life support measures and the best efforts of the clinical team, his condition deteriorated further and he suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest," the hospital said in a statement. 

He has recorded over 40,000 songs in 16 Indian languages.

He has garnered six National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer for his works in four different languages; Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi; 25 Andhra Pradesh state Nandi Awards for his works towards Telugu cinema, numerous other state awards from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

He is a recipient of civilian awards such as Padma Shri (2001) and Padma Bhushan (2011) from the Government of India.

Mourning his death, President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, "In the passing of music legend SP Balasubrahmanyam Indian music has lost one of its most melodious voices. Called ‘Paadum Nila' or ‘Singing Moon’ by his countless fans, he was honoured with Padma Bhushan and many National Awards. Condolences to his family, friends and admirers."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "With the unfortunate demise of Shri SP Balasubrahmanyam, our cultural world is a lot poorer. A household name across India, his melodious voice and music enthralled audiences for decades. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti."

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar tweeted, "Saddened to hear the news of SP Balasubrahmanyam's demise. I have worked a lot with him and did shows. I am reminded of all those memories. May his soul rest in peace..."

Veteran actor Anil Kapoor said, "Great human being and an incredible singer...lucky to have had him dub for me...give his voice to my performances in my first Telugu and Kannada film...SP Balasubrahmanyam will be missed truly...my heartfelt condolences & prayers to the family..."

Akshay Kumar tweeted, "Deeply saddened to hear about the demise of Balasubrahmanyam ji.Just a few months back I’d interacted with him during a virtual concert in this lockdown..he seemed hale,hearty & his usual legendary self...life is truly unpredictable. My thoughts & prayers with his family."

Legendary musician AR Rahman reacted, "Devastated."
