Filmmaker Nishikant Kamat of 'Drishyam' fame dies at 50

Mumbai/IBNS: Filmmaker Nishikant Kamat, best known for his directorial venture 'Drishyam', died on Monday. He was 50.

According to reports, he was suffering from liver cirrhosis for two years.

He was admitted at the AIG Hospitals in Hyderabad on July 31 with chronic liver problem and other secondary infections. Since then, he was treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital under the supervision of a multidisciplinary team of senior consultants.

Earlier in the day, the hospital authorities released a bulletin stating the filmmaker was in ventilation and his health condition remained critical.

His Drishyam lead actor, Ajay Devgn took to Twitter to condole the filmmaker's early demise and wrote: "My equation with Nishikant was not just about Drishyam, a film which he directed with Tabu and me. It was an association that I cherished. He was bright; ever-smiling. He has gone too soon. RIP Nishikant."

Actor Riteish Deshmukh tweeted: "I will miss you my friend. #NishikantKamat Rest In Peace."

Nishikant was best-known for directing the Hindi remake of Malayalam hit 'Drishyam' starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu.

He started his directorial career with 'Dombivali Fast', which earned him accolades in Marathi cinema including the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi in 2006.

His Bollywood debut project was based upon the 2006 Mumbai Bombings, titled, 'Mumbai Meri Jaan' featuring late actor Irrfan Khan. Nishinkant Directed Irrfan Khan in 'Madaari' too.

Nishikant, also an actor, played roles in his films like 'Rocky Handsome' starring John Abraham and 2018's 'Bhavesh Joshi.'
