Nepotism debate

Karan Johar can make someone's career but can't break anyone: Anurag Kashyap

New Delhi/IBNS: Amidst the ongoing debate on neoptism prevailing in the Bollywood film industry, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap on Thursday said director-producer Karan Johar, who has been accused of favouritism in tinsel town, can make an actor's career but will not break anyone.

He also said the nepotism debate should have surfaced 'some 10 years back.'

Speaking to NDTV channel, Kashyap, who has been recently bashed at for countering actress Kangana Ranaut's claim on this entire row triggered by actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death, said: "A Karan Johar can make somebody's career... by launching (him/her) in a big film. Because he's not just a filmmaker, he's also a businessman. He understands. But he cannot break anyone."

Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt are among those Bollywood biggies who have been slammed by social media users as well as Kangana for indulging in nepotism and as a result driving Sushant to end his life.

Sushant was found dead at his Mumbai's Bandra apartment on June 14.

Following his untimely demise, the entire debate on nepotism was triggered as according to Kangana his suicide was a result of favouritism in the B-Town and the unfair attitude meted out to the 34-year-old actor.

Speaking on whether equal opportunities are provided to 'outsiders' by big houses like Yash Raj Films (YRF) and Dharma Productions, Kashyap said the debate is 10 years too late.

"YRF (Yash Raj Films) today is very different from YRF 10 years ago," said Kashyap.

"Outsiders get more opportunities today than they got 10 years back. The whole debate is 10 years too late. Social media exists now, it didn't exist then," Kashyap said.

"Today, the audience has the power of validation. The audience can go and empower an outsider by watching his/her films," he told the channel.

Recently Anurag Kashyap has said he doesn't recognise this 'new Kangana.'

He has received flak from several social media users and actor Ranveer Shorey too.

Shorey tweeted: "So many independent-film-crusaders have turned mainstream-bollywood-flunkies now. These are the same people who used to rant 24/7 about the “system” for attention before they were given entry into the pearly gates of mainstream Bollywood. #Hypocrisy much?"

When was questioned by Kashyap on same, Shorey said he hadn't named anyone.
