I don't want myself to get stuck in one genre: Kriti Sanon

Actress Kriti Sanon, who caught the limelight by playing an unconventional girl in Bareilly Ki Barfi, will next be seen in the rom-com  Luka Chuppi. In the film, Sanon portrays a girl a live-in relationship with her co-star Kartik Aaryan, in disguise of marriage. IBNS-TWF brings some of the actress' latest interactions as the release date (Mar 1) draws close

Tell us how the live-in relationship is depicted in the film?

A point comes in the film where we (Sanon and Aaryan) wanted to marry but couldn't because it was apparently done. The film is a situational comedy and very funny with the kind of situations we get stuck in. Comedy in the film doesn't come out by cracking jokes ever but from the reactions of the characters.

Do you get the family pressures to get married in real life?

No. It doesn't occur now at all. Earlier wedding proposals used to come from the marriage ceremonies. But now the perception has changed. People know that I am now focusing on my career. At times people used to feel I am unapproachable, so they don't come with the proposals.

What are the advantages and disadvantages you think one can have in a live-in relationship?

The advantage is that one can get to know about the compatibility with his or her partner. Often during relationships, one shows the best version of oneself but the drawbacks get evident only in live-in relationships. But the disadvantage is the accessibility of rented-house to stay. This problem is also shown in our film where we had to act like married couples to get a rented house.

You are coming back to films after one and a half year. Do long gaps between films make you restless?

Yes of course. I think this is the first time when I have started to miss promotions as the film is about to release now (soon). Also I used to feel a little nervous when no film comes out for long. But I keep telling myself that everything is not under my control. There are certain films which do not release as per schedule. Moreover, the Fridays (usual release day of a film) nowadays are so booked that getting a date to release a film is a big task. I feel I should keep all the tensions up to the producer (smiles).

After seeing a dramatic change in Bollywood in terms of audience's acceptability of films in 2018, are you feeling positive and chilled-out this year?

I am definitely happier in 2019 as four of my films will be releasing. 2018 to me was more like working on those four films. Yes, the kind of films which did well and the ones that failed made us realise where the audience is probably shifting. The audience is shifting towards content-driven films. As actors we want to do credible films and also different genres. I personally do not want to get stuck in one genre for sure. Hopefully, the audience will maintain its trend of going for a film and not any actor or a star.

You are having four releases this year including Luka Chuppi. Do you think you have found yourself in a place where you can make the right choices?

I am sort of trying to balance it out and not just get myself stuck in one genre. But at the same time, I am still going by my gut which I used to do earlier. I think that is the best way to work through it. I am selecting the best ones from the films I have been offered. At the same time, I am making sure that I am not doing it for the heck of it because there are times when I used to get no good script. In those situations, when one doesn't have much offers, an actor gets tempted to choose the average ones. But I am not trying to do that.
