USA: New Mexico park mass shooting leaves three people dead, two arrested

Police said two people have been arrested over the mass shooting at Young Park in Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA, on Friday which left at least three people dead, media reports said.

Las Cruces Police said they have arrested one adult and one juvenile for their involvement in Friday’s mass shooting at Young Park.

The arrested adult person was identified as Tomas Rivas, 20.

Police said the arrested juvenile is a 17-year-old.

"Rivas will be booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he will initially be held without bond. The juvenile will be remanded to the juvenile detention facility," read the statement issued by the police.

Police said the juvenile will be remanded to the juvenile detention facility.

Police said the probe in the case is still ongoing.

Meanwhile, the 15 people injured in the incident were aged between 16 to 36.

The three victims who died at the scene were identified as Andrew Madrid, 16; Jason Gomez, 18; and Dominick Estrada, 19.

"Madrid and Gomez died on scene. Estrada was transported to MountainView Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries," police said.

"The other 15 victims, whose ages range from 16-36, were injured in the shooting. Of the 15 victims, nine are male and six are female. To help protect their privacy, police will not release their names publicly," the statement said.

The park remained closed on Saturday.

Reactions

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said the incident left her heartbroken.

"I am heartbroken and horrified by the mass shooting Friday night at Young Park in Las Cruces. Three people are dead and at least 15 others were wounded in this senseless act of violence. My heart goes out to the victims, their families, and the entire Las Cruces community during this unimaginably difficult time," she said in a statement.
