Two small planes collided midair close to the Fort Morgan Municipal Airport in northeast Colorado, US,  leaving at least one person dead and three others injured.

A Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300 collided while both pilots were attempting to land on Sunday morning, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement as quoted by CNN.

Two people were present in each plane.

Emergency responders reported seeing “black smoke” and “active flames,” according to dispatch audio recorded on the website Broadcastify as quoted by CNN.

Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are currently probing the incident.

The US has witnessed several aviation accidents in the current year.

Earlier in January,  a US Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines regional passenger jet collided midair in Washington DC, leaving 67 people dead.
