Washington, Nov 7 (IBNS): In a setback for US President Donald Trump, the Democrats are making their way to gain control in the House of Representatives as the results of the US midterm polls are pouring in  on Tuesday, media reports said.

The midterm polls were held on Nov 6.

Millions have cast their votes to elect members of both the houses, House of Representatives and the Senate.

The House of Representatives (lower house) has 435 members while the Senate (upper house) consists of 100 members.

In the House of Representatives, out of 397 seats, the results of which have come out, the Democratic Party has won 207 seats leaving 190 for the Republican Party.

In the Senate, the Republican Party held its control by winning 51 out of 95 seats, the results of which have been declared. The Democratic Party has so far won 42 seats.

The midterm elections, which is held every four years, is viewed as a reflection of the public's mood and a referendum on the President.

The elections result is expected to determine the future course of action by the US government, which is presently run by Donald Trump's Republican Party. In 2016, Trump became the President defeating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

With now a divided Congress, the Democrats will be able to block legislation brought by the Republicans.

Claiming his expected victory in the Senate as one of the rare occasions in the US politics, Trump termed himself as an "astonishing vote getter and campaigner". He tweeted, "“There’s only been 5 times in the last 105 years that an incumbent President has won seats in the Senate in the off year election. Mr. Trump has magic about him. This guy has magic coming out of his ears. He is an astonishing vote getter & campaigner. The Republicans are........."
