Trump extends support to Iranian protesters seeking prosecution of those responsible for Ukrainian plane crash

Washington/IBNS: US President Donald Trump has extended his support to the protesters in Iran who are demanding the resignation and prosecution of those responsible for the Ukrainian Boeing 737 plane crash with 176 people on board in Tehran.

Trump also tweeted in Farsi while expressing solidarity.

In a tweet, he wrote: "To the brave, long-suffering people of Iran: I've stood with you since the beginning of my Presidency, and my Administration will continue to stand with you. We are following your protests closely, and are inspired by your courage."

The US President said the Iranian government should allow human right groups to monitor these protests from the ground so that they don't turn into a massacre.

"The government of Iran must allow human rights groups to monitor and report facts from the ground on the ongoing protests by the Iranian people. There can not be another massacre of peaceful protesters, nor an internet shutdown. The world is watching," he wrote in a tweet.

Hundreds of students gathered on Saturday outside the Amirkabir University of Technology in Tehran to honour those killed in the fatal Ukrainian plane crash in Iran, which resulted in a rally that the police eventually dispersed, media reports said.

At least 176 people were killed as Ukraine International Airlines flight Boeing 737 crashed this week.

The incident occurred just hours after Iran carried out missile strikes on two airbases housing US forces in Iraq.

Iran later admitted that the Ukrainian plane had been unintentionally shot down by the country's military, who confused it for a hostile target.
