Washington, Mar 23 (Sputnik/UNI) US President Donald Trump met with leaders of countries in the Caribbean to discuss the political crisis in Venezuela and security cooperation, White House spokesperson Hogan Gidley said in a press release.

"President Trump met today with the leaders of The Bahamas, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Saint Lucia," Gidley said on Friday.

"They discussed the importance of supporting a peaceful democratic transition in Venezuela, disaster resilience, opportunities for investment, and ongoing security cooperation."

Moreover, Gidley said the US government has announced that the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) will give priority status to the five countries Trump met with and send a high-level delegation in about 3 months.

The OPIC is the US government's development finance institution, which mobilizes private capital in order to help solve crucial development challenges.
