Toronto supports Black History Month events
Toronto, Feb 6 (IBNS): The City of Toronto like every year this time too proudly supports events and exhibits scheduled for Black History Month, inviting members of the public to explore and celebrate the heritage, traditions and culture of African-Canadians.
Black History Month is an opportunity for the City of Toronto (including Toronto and adjoining cities) to recognize the past and present contributions made by African Canadians in the life of Toronto in areas such as education, medicine, art, culture, public service, economic development, politics and human rights.
Toronto Area Member of Parliament Jean Augustine had introduced a motion in 1995 which was passed unanimously by the House of Commons to recognize Black History Month across Canada.
Toronto community organizations such as the Canadian Negro Women’s Association In 1950s began to celebrate the importance of the history of the black communities.
Through efforts of many individuals and organizations such as the Ontario Black History Society, Toronto in 1979, became the first municipality in Canada to proclaim Black History Month.
Some of the organizations in Toronto which have organized Black History Month Events throughout the year are: Toronto Public Library, Mackenzie House, Scarborough Museum, Toronto Archives, Community and Recreation Centres, Civic Centres and many more.
