Mogadishu/Xinhua/UNI: Somali and US forces said they conducted an airstrike in southern Somalia on Monday, killing four terrorists in the latest strike targeting the al-Shabab extremist group in the Horn of African nation.

The US Africa Command (Africom) said the strike targeted al-Shabab terrorists in the vicinity of Janaale.

"Pressure on al-Shabab keeps them on their heels. It keeps them off balance and makes it more difficult for them to plan and operate," Miguel Castellanos, Africom's deputy director of operations said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Since 2017, the US military has stepped up air raids against al-Shabab which is fighting to overthrow the Somali government. The strikes have largely targeted al-Shabab figureheads based in southern Somalia where the group still maintains a strong grip in some regions.
