Raising stakes in the 'trade war', Donald Trump imposes 50 pct tariffs on steel coming to US from Canada

Washington DC/IBNS: Donald Trump on Tuesday doubled the tariff on all steel and aluminum products coming into the United States from Canada, bringing the total to 50 percent.

This is seen as a response to Canada placing a 25 percent tariff on electricity coming into the US.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he has instructed his commerce secretary to impose an additional 25 percent tariff on the products that will go into effect on Wednesday morning.

"Also, Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous. I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area," Trump wrote.

He also threatened to "substantially increase" tariffs on cars coming into the United States on April 2 "if other egregious, long time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada."

Last week, Trudeau said Justin Canada had slapped a 25 percent tariff on US products vowing to fight back Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs on Canadian imports, calling it a "trade war" that will "first and foremost harm American families".

Trudeau had said Canadians are "reasonable" and "polite," but will not back down from a fight, especially when the country's well-being is at stake.
