Pistorius apologises to girlfriend's family

Pretoria, Apr 7 (IBNS): Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius on Monday apologised to the family of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp who was shot dead last year.

The Paralympic athlete started testifying at his murder trial on Monday.

Pistorius  said he often woke up smelling her girlfriend's blood and even suffered 'terrible nightmares'.

"I wake up every morning and you're the first people I think of, the first people I pray for. I can't imagine the pain and the sorrow and the emptiness that I've caused you and your family," Pistorius was quoted as saying by BBC.

"I was simply trying to protect Reeva," he said.

"I'm scared to sleep, I have terrible nightmares, I can smell blood and wake up terrified," Pistorius said.

Pistorius was charged with murder and illegal possession of ammunition following the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in February last year.

He was granted bail on Feb 22, 2013.

Pistorius had admitted shooting dead Steenkamp, 29, while she was in the bathroom of his home on Feb 14. He claimed he mistook her for an intruder and denied a charge of premeditated murder.
