Pakistan condemns execution of Mir Quasem Ali in Bangladesh

Islamabad, Sept 4 (IBNS): Pakistan on Sunday condoled the execution of Bangladeshi Jamat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali on Saturday.

"Pakistan is deeply saddened over the execution of the prominent leader of Jamat-e-Islami, Bangladesh, Mir Quasem Ali, for the alleged crimes committed before December 1971, through a flawed judicial process," Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

"The act of suppressing the Opposition, through flawed trials, is completely against the spirit of democracy," it said.

The statement further said: "Ever since the beginning of the trials, several international organizations, human rights groups, and international legal figures have raised objections to the court proceedings, especially regarding fairness and transparency, as well as harassment of lawyers and witnesses representing the accused."

The government of Bangladesh should uphold its commitment, as per the Tripartite Agreement of 1974, wherein it "decided not to proceed with the trials as an act of clemency", the Pakistani government said.

"Recriminations for political gains are counter productive," read the statement.

In a major development, Jamaat-e-Islami’s key financier and a notorious Al-Badr leader of Chittagong during 1971 Mir Quasem Ali was hanged to death at a prison in Bangladesh on Saturday.

He was executed  for crimes committed against humanity during the Liberation War.

He was sentenced to death two years ago.

The 63-year-old Jamaat-e-Islami leader was hanged from the noose at 10:30pm, Proshanto Kumar Banik, senior jail superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail, was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.
