Ontario to promote education support for students with autism
Ottawa, Mar 14 (IBNS): The Ontario government is promoting existing programs and supports for educators to ensure students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) feel safe and supported in their classrooms, media reports said.
ASD is reportedly a range of neurodevelopmental disorders making individuals often hyper sensitive to sensory stimuli, face problems in social communication and social interaction, have restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests or activities, and problems in maintaining relationships and job.
Realizing that student success is of utmost priority, Lisa Thompson, Ontario Minister of Education said, "We're...ensuring both students and educators receive the support they need to succeed...to assist students with autism...and making sure we fill any gaps when it comes to promoting professional development."
ASD-specific Additional Qualification course for teachers is being fully subsidized by the government of Ontario to promote professional learning.
Ontario is also taking steps to provide double funding to Toronto's Geneva Centre for Autism, an international leader in the development and delivery of clinical intervention services and training.
Promotion of enrollment of students with high needs is also being taken care of by Ontario in providing funding to all 72 school boards with an average of $12,300 to ensure availability of proper supports during the transition from therapy to school.
