Oslo/UNI: Tension gripped the Norwegian capital after a clash broke out between two groups at an anti-community rally on late Saturday forcing authorities to step in and end the event early, local media reports said on Sunday.

The rally was organized by a far right group Stop Islamization of Norway (SIAN) near the country's parliament building.

Tensions boiled over when a person desecrated an objectionable material. Local police had to fire tear gas shells to keep rival groups apart and as per latest reports nearly 30 people have been arrested so far.

In reaction to this rally hundreds of rival-protesters also gathered nearby, banging drums and chanting slogans like "No racists in our streets".

Authorities resorted to the use of pepper spray and tear gas to keep the rival groups apart, eventually the SIAN rally had to be ended early.

This protest rally in Norway comes close on the heels of a similar incident in the Swedish city of Malmo on Friday, where too protesters clashed with the police.
