No new COVID-19 case reported in Hong Kong for 5 consecutive days

Hong Kong/ Xinhua: China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) reported no new case of COVID-19 on Thursday, the fifth consecutive day of zero case.

As of 4 pm Thursday local time, no new local confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been recorded, and the total number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong remains at 1,037, Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection announced.

According to Hong Kong's Hospital Authority, so far 846 patients who had confirmed or probable COVID-19 infections have been discharged from hospitals upon recovery.

The daily increase of COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong has remained at a single-digit level for more than two weeks, after weeks of surge in imported cases as well as local cluster outbreaks.

To curb the spread of the virus in Hong Kong amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, Hong Kong has implemented a series of measures, including traveler entry restriction, virus screening on inbound travelers, restriction on gatherings in local communities, as well as cancellation of many public events.

HKSAR Chief Executive Carrie Lam said in a post on social media on Thursday that the SAR government has canceled this year's Labor Day Reception because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The epidemic situation in Hong Kong is under control at present as Hong Kong has seen zero growth in the number of COVID-19 cases for days, Lam noted, adding that Hong Kong may also be able to survive the current "economic winter" as the HKSAR government has rolled out relief measures costing nearly 300 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 38.7 billion U.S. dollars).

Meanwhile, she expressed concerns that Hong Kong cannot afford repeated political damage and resurgent violence.
