New York/IBNS: At least six people were stabbed at the residence of a rabbi in US city of New York, media reports said on Sunday.

The incident occurred during the Hanukkah celebration in the house.

The Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council for the Hudson Valley Region said in a tweet that victims inside the Monsey residence were Hasidic Jews. Two people are in critical condition, co-founder of the council, Yossi Gestetner, told CNN.

The suspect in the incident first fled away but was later taken into custody.

The motive behind the incident is still not known.

The Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council for the Hudson Valley Region said one of the victims was stabbed six times by the attacker.

"One of the victims was stabbed at least 6 times. The fifth/least severe case had a cut in his hand. Perp left in a vehicle with tag number HPT-5757 per the person who saw it and we confirmed it with him directly (but it was dark and rushed.) a Gray Nissan Sentra," OJPAC tweeted.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the incident left him 'horrified'.

"I am horrified by the stabbing of multiple people at a synagogue in Rockland County tonight. We have zero tolerance for anti-Semitism in NY and we will hold the attacker accountable to the fullest extent of the law," he tweeted.

Israel President Reuven Rivlin tweeted: "Shocked and outraged by the terrible attack in #NY and praying for the recovery of those injured. #Antisemitism is not just a #Jewish problem, and certainly not just the State of #Israel's problem. We must work together to confront this rising evil, which is a real global threat."
