Kathmandu/IBNS: Thousands of Gen-Zs in Nepal hit the streets of Kathmandu in protest against the ban on social media in the country, media reports said.

The young people occupying the streets also demanded an end to the corruption prevailing in the country.

The government blocked 26 unregistered platforms including popular social media sites including Facebook, YouTube and X last Friday.

Only a few platforms such as TikTok and Viber complied and remained accessible.

The crowd gathered on the streets waving National Flag and chanting slogans against the ban and corruption.

Clashes erupted—police used tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons, and batons to disperse crowds trying to breach restricted areas.
Officials claimed the ban was necessary to curb misinformation, hate speech, cybercrime, and online fraud.

They said registered companies would have to set up offices in Nepal, pay taxes, and share data when legally required.
