Myanmar: Ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi awarded four years jail term

A Myanmar court has sentenced ousted leader and Nobel peace prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison.

She was found guilty on charges of inciting dissent and breaking Covid rules under a natural disasters law, reports BBC.

Suu Kyi was found guilty by a Myanmar court on 11 charges, all of which she has denied.

The Nobel prize winner has been in detention since February when a military coup ousted her elected civilian government.

It is still not clear when the Myanmar leader will be placed in prison.

She is being held at an undisclosed location, reports BBC.

Suu Kyi's ally and former president of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party, Win Myint was also handed the same sentence on similar charges.

In 2020, Suu Kyi had won the election by a large margin but the military refused to recognise the poll results.

On February 1, the military staged a coup and since then more than 1,000 civilians have been killed, which led to armed rebellions.
